You may have seen things in the news or online lately talking about the shortage of R-22, also commonly known as Freon, but we have good news. There is no shortage at Expert Express! If you are in need of R-22, we can get you cooling right away.
What is R-22?
R-22 or hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) is used to make the air cold in your air conditioner. It was invented in 1928 and has been used as the standard refrigerant in air conditioning systems ever since.
Why Is It Going Away?
In 1992, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) realized that R-22 harms the Earth’s protective ozone layer when it is released into the air. According to the EPA, The stratospheric ozone layer shields the Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Emissions of certain synthetic chemicals—including CFCs, halons, and HCFCs—destroy the ozone layer, and have created an “ozone hole” over the South Pole.
Upon this discovery, the EPA made a plan to slowly take R-22 off the market by the year 2020 by stopping manufacturers from producing or importing it. Although the production is being phased out, you are not required to stop using R-22 air conditioners nor to replace existing equipment. If you still have an R-22 air conditioner that is in good working condition, there is no shortage of R-22 at Expert Express and you will be able to keep this conditioner until it becomes the time that you need to replace yours. At that time, we can talk with you about other ozone-friendly refrigerants and HVAC options.
